Delta Ambulance Citizens Academy is a hands-on opportunity for the residents of the community to learn many different aspects of the skills utilized by Delta Paramedics and EMTs. This Academy is designed for people, who are interested in learning more about emergency medical services (EMS). Participants will need to complete a simple application, be 18 years of age, be willing to commit the necessary time and have no record of a felony. After course completion, graduates will have the opportunity to participate in a ride-along observing Delta paramedics and EMTs on actual emergencies. The academy provides hands-on training, one evening per week, 6-8 p.m., for 8 weeks, demonstrating the skills of EMS crews. Using mannequins, participants will learn why starting IV’s, intubations (placing a breathing tube), defibrillations, reading heart rhythms are essential in performing a full “code” (cardiac resuscitation).
