Our Literacy Programs are free to all Maine Residents 17 and older who are no longer enrolled in school!

ESOL: English for Speakers of Other Languages

Welcome to Our ESOL Program!

Whether you’re a student preparing for academic success, a professional aiming to excel in an English-speaking workplace, or an individual eager to navigate social interactions with confidence, our ESOL program is designed for you!

Program Structure

The ESOL program is structured into multiple levels to accommodate learners at various proficiency stages. You will engage in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skill development to empower you in every aspect of your English communication. Our approach provides opportunities to apply your language skills to real-world scenarios. We align our ESOL program with the Adult Education English Language Proficiency Standards, to ensure success of our learners.

Enrollment Process

Call our office at (207) 873-5754 or email adulted@aos92.org to begin enrollment. The first meeting will be a Welcome Meeting and Assessment, in this meeting learners will first become familiar with some of the Staff at MMRACE, our location, and complete the Pre-Assessments in both Reading and Math required for enrollment. At that meeting learners will be scheduled for an Individualized Advising Appointment for Intake and Goals with our Academic Student Coordinator, during that meeting learners will complete required intake paperwork and releases. During that meeting learners will receive their class schedule and Orientation date.

Adult Basic Education

Our Adult Basic Education program helps learners who are transitioning out of our ESOL program. Learners may also join our Adult Basic Education program to transition into one of our Adult Secondary Diploma pathways. We also have learners who take our Adult Basic Education courses to keep their skills sharp and connect with community. These courses are primarily English and Math based. Our Team will work with you to find the courses that are best suited for your current needs and your future goals. You may be in our Adult Basic Education program if:

Pre-HSD: ABE is appropriate if you need foundational skills in Math and English to prepare for a high school diploma program. These courses will build your academic abilities and confidence, ensuring you are ready for the challenges of a secondary education.

Tutoring: ABE offers tailored support in Math and English, providing the necessary tutoring to help you overcome specific challenges. This individualized attention ensures you master essential skills, paving the way for academic and personal success.

Learning in Community: ABE courses allow you to engage with other adult learners in a supportive environment, fostering a sense of community. This collaborative approach enhances your learning experience, helps build a local support network, and keeps your skills sharp through continuous practice and interaction.

Post-HSD: ABE is suitable if you’ve already obtained a high school diploma but wish to maintain or improve your Math and English skills for career advancement or personal development.
